Line-Voltage Thermostats for Baseboard Heat

Thermostats that switch baseboard and wall heaters directly, ordered by the load their makers rate them for, highest first.

By Thermostandard Editorial · Updated October 2026

Baseboard and wall heaters need a thermostat that can switch their full current at 120 or 240 volts. The rating is what matters: add up the heaters' watts and divide by the voltage. A 2,000-watt heater on 240 volts draws about 8.3 amps. These thermostats are ordered by their maker-stated maximum load, highest first, so the first picks handle the most heaters.

Check the voltage and poles too. Double-pole models break both live legs of a 240-volt circuit; single-pole models break one. Line voltage can kill, so switch the breaker off and use a licensed electrician if you're unsure.

EIA's 2020 survey counted 7.65 million U.S. homes heated mainly by built-in electric units, each room usually with its own line-voltage thermostat.

How this ranking was builtEvery line-voltage thermostat in our catalog with a maker-stated maximum load qualifies. Our editors order them by that load in amps (converted from watts at the highest listed voltage where the maker gives watts only), highest first.

How to choose

Add up the watts of every heater the thermostat will control and divide by the voltage; the thermostat's maximum current must be at least that. Then match voltage (120, 208 or 240 V) and poles to the heater's instructions.

Wi-Fi models add schedules and phone control but carry the same load limits. Have an electrician do the work if you're unsure; this is household voltage.

When another list fits better

For furnaces, boilers and heat pumps, use a low-voltage thermostat from the smart or programmable tables.

Questions shoppers ask

How many baseboard heaters can one thermostat run?
As many as fit within its rating: heater watts divided by volts must be at or under its maximum current.
What's a double-pole thermostat?
One that breaks both live legs of a 240-volt circuit, usually with a true off.
Can I put a Nest on baseboard heat?
Not directly; use a line-voltage thermostat or a relay the maker approves.
Is baseboard thermostat wiring dangerous?
It carries household voltage. Turn off the breaker, confirm with a tester, and hire an electrician if unsure.
