Zoning
Zoning and Humidity Controls
Zone panels, dampers, humidistats and dehumidistats with their makers' zone counts, voltage and ranges side by side.
Zoning lets one system heat or cool parts of the house separately: motorised dampers in the ducts, a thermostat for each zone, and a panel that opens dampers and runs the equipment. It's usually designed and installed by an HVAC contractor, because the system has to cope with one small zone calling on its own.
Humidistats switch a whole-house humidifier or dehumidifier by humidity rather than temperature. Some smart thermostats can do the same through an accessory terminal; their makers say so.
What's on your wall now?
Upstairs and downstairs never agree
Zone panels run each zone's dampers from its own thermostat.
Adding a zone to the ducts
Motorised dampers open and close a duct run on the panel's command.
Dry winter air
Humidistats switch a furnace humidifier by humidity.
Damp summers or basements
Dehumidistats run a whole-house dehumidifier.
