Editorial standards

• Compatibility and ratings are the maker's own statements; 'Not stated' means the maker doesn't say.
• A ranking always shows the rule that orders it.
• Commissions have no bearing on coverage, wording or order.
• Line-voltage wiring and work inside furnaces and air handlers is flagged for a licensed electrician or HVAC technician.
• Readers and makers can have a statement corrected by showing the source.

Lines we don't cross

• Payment, free products or favours in return for coverage.
• Telling you a thermostat will definitely work in your home; the maker's checker and your installer have the last word.
• Promising a saving, or filling a gap in a listing with a guess.
