A second stage shows up as an extra wire: W2 for a second heat stage, Y2 for a second compressor stage. If you see neither, your system is single-stage and almost any thermostat that fits your system type works. If you see either, pick a thermostat whose maker states support for that many stages.
What a stage is
A single-stage furnace is either off or running full out. A two-stage furnace has a low fire for mild weather and a high fire for cold snaps; a two-stage air conditioner or heat pump does the same with its compressor. Low stage runs longer and quieter and evens out temperatures; high stage catches up when it's needed. Honeywell Home's wiring guide lists W as heat stage 1, Aux/W2 as heat stage 2, Y as compressor stage 1 and Y2 as compressor stage 2.
The thermostat decides when to step up. A thermostat that only knows one stage leaves the second unused, and you've paid for equipment that never runs its low stage efficiently.
Reading the stages from your wires
| Wires on the old thermostat | What it usually means |
|---|---|
| W only (plus R, maybe C, G) | Single-stage heat |
| W and W2 | Two-stage heat |
| Y only | Single-stage cooling |
| Y and Y2 | Two-stage cooling (or two-stage heat pump compressor) |
| O/B, Y, AUX/W2 | Single-stage heat pump with backup heat |
| O/B, Y, Y2, AUX/W2 | Two-stage heat pump with backup heat |
A wire sitting on W2 at the thermostat but not connected at the furnace is not a second stage. If the furnace is labelled two-stage but there's no W2 wire, the furnace may be running its own timer to step up, which some installers set up deliberately; the furnace manual will say.
How makers write stage support
Listings use several shorthands. '2H/2C' means two heat and two cool stages on a conventional system. '3H/2C heat pump' usually means a two-stage compressor plus one stage of auxiliary heat. 'Multi-stage' alone tells you little; look for the numbers. Our product pages quote each maker's own wording under 'Heat / cool stages' and mark it 'Not stated' when the listing doesn't say.
| Thermostat | Stages (maker) | Systems (maker) |
|---|---|---|
| Heagstat H721 Non-Programmable Thermostat | 2 Heat/1 Cool | Compatibility: Works with 2H/1C heat pump systems (with Aux or Emergency heating) |
| Heagstat H725 Programmable Thermostat | 2 Heat/1 Cool | Compatibility: Works with 2H/1C heat pump systems (with Aux or Emergency heating) |
| Honeywell Home RTH8500D1013/E1 Programmable Thermostat | 2h/2c | works with conventional and heat pump systems up to 2H/2C, it's one thermostat for nearly every application |
| Honeywell Home TH2210U4005 Programmable Thermostat | up to 2 heat/1 cool | Not stated |
Variable-speed and communicating equipment
Some high-end furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps are variable-speed or modulating and talk to their own thermostat over a data link. Honeywell's guide says that terminals labelled A, B, C or 1, 2, 3 mean a communicating system that a standard thermostat may not run. You can sometimes wire a standard thermostat to such equipment in a fallback two-stage mode, but you lose the modulation that justified the equipment. The equipment maker's manual is the place to check.
A worked example
Six wires on R, C, W, W2, Y and G: two-stage heat with single-stage cooling. A thermostat stating '2H/1C' or better fits. Seven wires on R, C, Y, Y2, G, O/B and W2 on a heat pump: two compressor stages and backup heat, so you need a thermostat stating heat pump support with two compressor stages plus auxiliary heat, often written 3H/2C.
Enter the wires in the wiring checker; it filters out any thermostat whose maker states fewer stages than your wires call for, and flags listings that don't say.
Settings after installation
Most multi-stage thermostats decide when to call the second stage either by time (switch up after the first stage has run a set number of minutes) or by the gap between the room and the setpoint. The defaults suit most homes. If the house overshoots or the high stage runs constantly, the installer settings in the thermostat's manual are where to look.
